The Denver Broncos have signed tight end Chris Manhertz to a 2 yr $6 MM deal with $3.34 MM guaranteed at signing. This signing is an unheralded addition to the Broncos as Manhertz is a versatile and experienced player. He has been in the league for 7 years. He doesn’t boast the most impressive resume but showcases his ability to contribute in many different ways.

Manhertz is known for his blocking, and his presence on the field will help the Broncos’ offensive line. He will essentially be a sixth offensive lineman at 6’6” and 255 lbs. In addition, he has proven himself as a reliable blocker for kick and punt returns, and his size/athleticism mix make him a valuable asset in the third phase. With his experience and expertise, Manhertz will undoubtedly play a key role in Denver’s offensive strategies and game plans.

Head coach Sean Payton has some familiarity with Manhertz as he played for him in New Orleans briefly in 2016. Coach Payton has stated that he would bring a level of toughness and physicality to the team, both on and off the field.

Manhertz started his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills in 2015, mostly as a special teams contributor. He then moved to the Carolina Panthers in 2016, while bouncing around to three other teams that season. Then he solidified his roster spot in Carolina from 2017-20. He played primarily as a blocking tight end. During his time with the Panthers, he accumulated 12 receptions for 142 yards and 1 touchdown.

Despite his limited production in the passing game, Manhertz’s value lies in his ability to create opportunities for other players with his blocking skills. He will provide a much-needed boost to the Broncos’ running game, which struggled to gain any footing last season.

Chris Manhertz solidifies the Broncos’ offense and special teams and adds depth to the tight end position. It’s a smart move by the organization and could pay dividends in the upcoming season.

Overall, the signing of Chris Manhertz is a necessary move for the Denver Broncos after leaving Eric Tomlinson out on the market and Eric Saubert signing with the Miami Dolphins leaving an opening for a blocking vet in the tight end group. His skill set and experience will help the team achieve success in the coming seasons, by doing the things that don’t fill up the stat sheet, but lend themselves to a winning culture. Stay tuned for more updates on the Broncos and their upcoming season.
