The Broncos had a revolving door at RB in 2023. They hope Samaje Perine can put a stop to that.
The Denver Broncos have added depth to their running back position by signing Samaje Perine to a 2 year $7.5 MM deal. The 27-year-old RB played his college football at the University of Oklahoma, where he rushed for over 4,000 yards and scored 51 total touchdowns during his three seasons with the Sooners.
Perine was selected by the Washington Football Team in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and he spent his first three seasons with the team rushing for 603 yards and 1 TD his rookie season. He then played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020, where he rushed for 301 yards and three touchdowns on 63 carries. The most crucial stat for Broncos fans should be the fact he hasn’t fumbled in 5 years.
The addition of Perine brings a a much needed veteran presence to the Broncos’ young running back group, which includes third-year player Javonte Williams coming off a torn ACL and a group of 2nd and 3rd year former undrafted free-agents after him. Perine has proven to be a reliable runner, a solid pass-blocker, and a good receiver out of the backfield.
The Broncos hope that Perine’s experience and versatility will help improve their rushing attack, which ranked 21st in the NFL last season. The team finished with a record of 5-12 in 2022 and missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year after their Super Bowl 50 victory in 2015.
Perine’s signing is just one move in an offseason that has seen the Broncos make significant changes to their roster. The team has a new right tackle in Mike McGlinchey, and offensive guard Ben Powers. They also added depth to their secondary with the signings of cornerback Tremon Smith and defensive end Zach Allen.
The Broncos are looking to bounce back from a disappointing season, and the addition of Perine is a step in the right direction. With his solid skills as a runner, blocker, and receiver, he will provide a boost to the Broncos’ offense while they wait for Javonte Williams to return from the aforementioned injury. Then can provide a potent 1-2 punch of runners both capable of all three jobs an RB are expected to perform; run, catch, and block.
Perine is excited to join the Broncos and is looking forward to working with his new teammates. “I’m ready to get to work and do whatever it takes to help this team win,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of talent in this locker room, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
Broncos fans are intrigued about the addition of Perine and are hoping he can help push the team to the playoffs this season. With his experience and versatility, Perine could be a key piece in the Broncos’ quest for postseason success. All in Broncos Country just need to look to 2022 when eight different running backs toted the rock for Denver to know how important depth is at the position.
