Denver Broncos Sign Guard Ben Powers

The Denver Broncos went into day one of free agency with an obvious plan. Get better in the trenches and they did.

The Denver Broncos have made a big move in the off-season, both literally and figuratively signing guard Ben Powers. The deal for the 24-year-old lineman is for 4 yrs and $51.5 MM. He will bring depth and versatility to the Broncos’ offensive line, which struggled at times last season to put it kindly. The biggest stat at first glance being he played in all 18 games including playoffs in 2022. Something no lineman accomplished for the 2022 Denver Broncos who only played 17.

Powers was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Ravens, appearing in 47 games and starting 36. The 6-foot-4, 310-pound guard played a key role in Baltimore’s run-heavy offense, paving the way for former MVP Lamar Jackson and a revolving door of running backs that no matter how obscure found giant holes on the way to 100-yard rushing days.

He is no slouch in pass pro improving to the point of not giving up a single sack in 2022. He told denverbroncos.com reporter Sydney Jones “I take pride in keeping my quarterback clean.”

Powers will join a talented group of offensive linemen in Denver, including Pro Bowlers Garett Bolles and fellow new signing Mike McGlinchey. He’ll most likely take over the left-guard position vacated by current free agent Dalton Risner.

He is not pigeonholed there with his ability to play both guard positions which will make him a valuable asset for the Broncos. And gives them two guards that can play on either side of the center with third-year player Quinn Meinerz who has spent most of his NFL career at right guard and center. But Meinerz, like Powers, is more than capable of switching between either guard position depending on where new o-line coach Zach Streif deems them best suited in head coach Sean Payton’s new offensive scheme.

The signing of Powers is another step in the right direction for the Broncos, who are looking to build a competitive team after a disappointing 5-12 season in 2022. With a strong offensive line and a talented group of skill players.

Powers is known for his physicality and aggressive blocking style, which should fit well with the Broncos’ expected run-first offensive approach. His ability to quickly adapt to a new system and work well with his teammates has impressed coaches and teammates alike throughout his career.

Fans are eager to see this new offensive line in action. With the addition of Powers and a number of other promising players, the Broncos are well-positioned to build a strong running game in the upcoming season.

The signing of Ben Powers is a significant move for the Denver Broncos as they continue to build a strong team for the future. Powers’ impressive work ethic and passion for the game make him a perfect fit for the Broncos’ culture and philosophy. What makes the Broncos a fit for him though? There is nothing quite like the allure of playing closer to home for some players. Powers went to Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School while growing up in Wichita, KS. That is a roughly 7.5-hour drive east from Denver down I-70.

Ben Powers says so himself below in the above-mentioned interview with Denverbroncos.com reporter Sydney Jones:

Powers’ versatility and flexibility are also promising qualities that will allow him to contribute in a number of ways. As a versatile guard who can play both sides of the offensive line, Powers will add depth and competition to this group of linemen being amassed in Dove Valley.

In addition to his on-field skills, Powers is also known for his leadership and character, and he he will most likely become a favorite among his new teammates. With his positive attitude and hardworking spirit, he will undoubtedly be a valuable asset to the team both on and off the field.
