The Denver Broncos have announced their latest acquisition with the signing of defensive end Zach Allen on a 4-yr $47.75 MM deal. The 25-year-old played his college ball at Boston College, where he racked up an impressive 199 total tackles, 40.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks and two interceptions in four seasons.

Allen was widely regarded as an intriguing prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was the quintessential tape over testing prospect. He had the great production at a D1 school as stated above and great size at 6’4” 281 lbs., but then he went to the combine and just put up meh numbers. So he slipped through the cracks and the Arizona Cardinals selected him in the third round with the 65th overall pick.

Despite a slow start to his career totaling just 26 solo tackles and 2 sacks in his first two seasons. His final two seasons in Phoenix saw a real impact for the Cardinals, recording 95 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 9.5 sacks in the 2021-‘22 seasons. Putting his best foot forward in 2022 where he had the second best run-stop percentage of 5.5% behind only Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams.

The addition of Zach Allen to the Broncos’ defensive line gives them a talented and versatile player who can line up at multiple positions and provide a strong pass-rushing presence. This became crucial when former starter Dre’Mont Jones signed with Seattle the same day. With Allen joining a unit that already features stalwarts like Randy Gregory, and D.J. Jones. He also joins CB Tremon Smith as a new face in the defensive meeting room. The Broncos’ defense looks poised to be a force to be reckoned with, again, in the upcoming season under Vance Joseph’s tutelage.

Broncos fans are understandably excited about this signing, as Allen brings a combination of size and grit that has endeared former players like Derek Wolfe and Bill Romanowski to Broncos Country in years past. He has the size and strength to take on offensive linemen and disrupt plays in the backfield both against the pass and run. His ability to move quickly off the line of scrimmage and get to the quarterback will also add a vital pass-rushing element to the Broncos’ defense.

Denver defensive-coordinator Vance Joseph is known for his defensive expertise, and he will undoubtedly have a plan in place to get the best out of Allen. The young player has all the tools to be a star in the NFL, and the Broncos will be looking to develop him into a cornerstone of their defense for years to come.
