Colorado Avalanche came in fighting for playoff seeding. Ottawa made it a tough one.
Embed from Getty ImagesOn Thursday evening, hockey fans were treated to what looked like a lopsided matchup as the Colorado Avalanche faced off against the Ottawa Senators. The game was a back-and-forth battle that ultimately saw the Avalanche come out on top with a 5-4 victory.
The game started off with a bang as both teams came out strong, trading chances and goals early on. The first period ended in a 2-1 Avs lead. with goals coming from Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar and winger Valeri Nichushkin. Senators’ winger Drake Batherson answered with his 20th goal of the season.
The second period saw the Avalanche extend that lead, with goals from winger Mikko Rantanen improving his career high to 45 goals. Avalanche centers Lars Eller and Evan Rodrigues chipped in a goal apiece to make the score 5-2. Senator center Shane Pinto scored the only Ottawa goal of the period.
The third period was a tense affair, with the Senators fighting hard for the win. The Avalanche fell flat after being shutout in the period as Ottawa rallied to bring it close at 5-4 with goals from defenseman Travis Hamonic and forward Brady Tkachuk.
Despite bringing it close at 5-4 with less than three minutes left. It looked like it could get dire. But with less than two minutes remaining, Avalanche back-up goalie Jonas Johansson settled down and completed the victory in regulation to give the Avs two points.
Overall, it was a thrilling game that showcased the skill and determination of both teams. The Avalanche’s win over the Senators was a testament to their resilience and never-say-die attitude.
But the win wasn’t the only thing that fans were talking about. The game was also notable for the exceptional play of some of the NHL’s brightest young stars. Cale Makar, for example, was not only responsible for the game-first goal but also tallied an assist on Big Val touching the net. The fact 9 goals were scored and no player scored more than one is a testament to the depth of both squads.
Of course, it wasn’t just the young guns who shone in this game. Avalanche veterans Valeri Nichushkin and Mikko Rantanen had two goals and two assists combined, showing once again why this is one of the league’s premier teams. And Senators veteran Brady Tkachuk had a goal and an assist, proving that experience still counts for a lot in the NHL.
All in all, the Avalanche’s 5-4 victory over the Senators was a game that had everything: drama, skill, and plenty of excitement. Let’s hope that in the next game, the Avalanche can give us an easier win. But never should you complain about two points in regulation, so enjoy Colorado fans. Next up is a road tilt in Detroit against the Red Wings on Saturday, March 18 at 11:00 AM MST.
